About our Staff

The Central New York ETA...

provides a skilled, knowledgeable and able workforce for the unionized electrical industry within the Central New York area. This covers locations between Syracuse and Cooperstown, from Thendara to Cortland and all points that fall in between, including the metropolitan areas of Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Oswego, and Fulton. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 43 and the Finger Lakes National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) jointly sponsor this apprenticeship program that offers the opportunity to earn wages and benefits while learning the skills necessary for a challenging and rewarding career as a construction electrician. As an apprentice, you are given the opportunity to literally earn while you learn, using your intellect combined with your physical capabilities to perform duties in various settings with the continuous occurrence of new learning.

Train with the Experts

The CNYETA training program is well rounded, intensive, and up-to-date with the latest developments in the industry. IBEW Local 43 electricians are called on to complete the most challenging projects in Central New York and it’s the reason that you will be in high demand wherever you go.

The apprenticeship system is simple. You learn from the masters of the trade. Journey-level IBEW electricians. In the classroom and on-the-job, these seasoned experts pass their years of experience and knowledge to you.

Even if you have no electrical knowledge now, you will leave the Central New York JTraining Alliance training program with the knowledge, skills, and benefits of an expert NECA/IBEW electrician and a trade that can support you for the rest of your working life.

4.

Take classes in the state-of-the-art classrooms and multi-purpose labs of the John J. Barry Electrical Training Center. Work on job sites with experienced, journey-level electricians who walk you through the skills and techniques of the craft. Learn how to plan, install, and service complete electrical systems for all types of projects.

5.

Master vital knowledge such as electrical theory, programmable logic controls, digital alarm systems, National Electrical Code, and blueprint reading. Then continue to upgrade your skills through journey-level continuing education in new codes and technologies

CNYETA Staff

Assistant Training Director
Tom Reap joined the teaching staff in 2021 and became Assistant Training Director in 2022. Tom is a Journeyman Electrician with IBEW local 43 and has a BA in History from Le Moyne College. Tom has held many positions in our industry including Forman, Estimator, Project Manager, and Instructor. Tom uses those experience to develop programs and curriculum to better prepare our apprentices for a diverse career.

Instructor
Mike Mattice started teaching night classes in 2016. He became a full time instructor in Fall of 2020. Mike’s a Journeyman Electrician with the IBEW Local Union 43. Mike won craftsman of the year award in 2019, NYS Lineman’s Safety Training.

Instructor
Allen Westcott has been a full time teacher since 2021 and had previously taught part time. Allen is a Journeyman Electrician with IBEW local 43. Allen worked in service for many years, and specializes in teaching how to trouble shoot systems.

Instructor
Robert Evans is a full time instructor starting his first year in September of 2018. Robert is a Journeyman Electrician with the IBEW Local Union 43 and teaches our control based curriculum with emphasis on industrial controls & process systems.

Instructor
Alicia Michalski joined the teaching staff in 2022. She is a Journeyman Electrician with the IBEW Local Union 43. She has previously held a Forman position and taught highschoolers at a career and technical school (OHM BOCES). Alicia teaches a wide variety of topics in the program and will help to create well-rounded apprentices.

Instructor
Jon Reitz joined the teaching staff in 2022. Jon is a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local Union 43 and holds a BS in Physics from the University of Albany, SUNY. Jon brings advanced technical skill to the training program.

Training Director

Ray Tucker became the Training Director in 2021 and had served as a trustee to the ETA since 2018. Ray is a journeyman Electrician with the IBEW Local 43 and has a BA in Environmental Design from The University at Buffalo, SUNY.
